Know before you drive in Mykonos
Mykonos Town (Chora) is pedestrianised and you cannot drive into the old town. The free lot at the Fabrika bus station fills by about 10:00 in high season, and police ticket or tow cars blocking the narrow port road.
ATVs are everywhere on Mykonos but offer no shade or crash protection. Since September 2025, Greek rental operators may not hand out quads, scooters or motorbikes without helmets, and you need a valid licence for the vehicle you rent.
Roads to the south-coast beaches are paved but narrow, while tracks to Panormos, Agios Sostis and Fokos are partly or fully unpaved. There are no street lights on these tracks, so avoid them on two wheels after dark.
Before you book
Deposit
Most companies block a deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. Local agencies often ask for less. Check the amount before you book.
Excess
Basic insurance usually leaves an excess of several hundred euros. Full or zero-excess cover removes it, at a daily cost.
Fuel policy
Choose full-to-full. Full-to-empty means paying the company's fuel price for a tank you rarely use up.
Mykonos: questions
How much does a rental car cost in Mykonos?
Economy cars start around €18 a day, and the average across car classes is about €37 a day (checked on Kayak). Prices are lower in winter and highest in July and August.
Do I need a credit card?
Most companies want a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Some local agencies accept debit cards, usually with their full insurance.
Where is the booking made?
On the partner's site. getRentera sends you there with your city and dates filled in, and you pay the partner directly.
Is a car worth it in Mykonos?
For a short stay, often not: the island is small, and KTEL buses from Fabrika run to the main south-coast beaches and Ano Mera roughly every 20–30 minutes in summer. A car helps for north-coast beaches the buses don't reach, but in August cars and ATVs can be hard to find.
Can I bring a rental car from Athens on the ferry?
Ferries charge a separate vehicle ticket, and many rental contracts require written approval for ferry travel or exclude damage during the crossing. With parking as tight as it is on Mykonos, check the contract carefully before bringing a car over.
