Know before you drive in Florence

  1. Florence's historic centre is a ZTL with plate-reading cameras at its gates, active Mon–Fri 7:30–20:00 and Sat 7:30–16:00, plus Thu–Sat 23:00–03:00 from April to early October. Fines are passed on through the rental company, often months after your trip.

  2. If your hotel is inside the ZTL, give it your plate number on arrival so it can register the car with the municipal police. Every entry through a gate counts separately, so each extra trip in or out needs to be covered too.

  3. Park outside the ZTL at a park-and-ride such as Villa Costanza, Ponte a Greve, Via Sansovino or Viale Guidoni and take the tram into the centre.

Guides for Florence

Before you book

Deposit

Most companies block a deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. Local agencies often ask for less. Check the amount before you book.

Excess

Basic insurance usually leaves an excess of several hundred euros. Full or zero-excess cover removes it, at a daily cost.

Fuel policy

Choose full-to-full. Full-to-empty means paying the company's fuel price for a tank you rarely use up.

Florence: questions

How much does a rental car cost in Florence?

Economy cars start around €30 a day, and the average across car classes is about €51 a day (checked on Kayak). Prices are lower in winter and highest in July and August.

Do I need a credit card?

Most companies want a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Some local agencies accept debit cards, usually with their full insurance.

Where is the booking made?

On the partner's site. getRentera sends you there with your city and dates filled in, and you pay the partner directly.

Can I drive into Florence's centre?

Only during ZTL hours if you are authorised, for example when your hotel inside the zone registers your plate. Outside those hours, such as on Sundays and public holidays, the zone is open, but watch for pedestrian areas and bus lanes, which are always off-limits.

What are the best day trips by car from Florence?

The Chiantigiana (SR 222) runs south through Greve, Panzano and Castellina in Chianti towards Siena. San Gimignano is about 40 km away, roughly 50 minutes; its centre is also a ZTL, so use the P1–P4 car parks outside the walls.
