Know before you drive in Málaga

  1. Málaga's low-emission zone (ZBE) covers most of the city centre and is enforced by cameras 24/7. Vehicles without a DGT environmental label are barred, so check that your rental car carries a label sticker (0, ECO, C or B).

  2. The historic centre is restricted to authorised vehicles, so don't try to drive to accommodation in the old town; use a public car park on its edge instead.

  3. Nerja is about an hour east along the A-7, and Ronda roughly 1 h 45 min inland via the A-357. Ronda's main streets are packed by late morning in July and August, so set off early.

Before you book

Deposit

Most companies block a deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. Local agencies often ask for less. Check the amount before you book.

Excess

Basic insurance usually leaves an excess of several hundred euros. Full or zero-excess cover removes it, at a daily cost.

Fuel policy

Choose full-to-full. Full-to-empty means paying the company's fuel price for a tank you rarely use up.

Málaga: questions

How much does a rental car cost in Málaga?

Economy cars start around €14 a day, and the average across car classes is about €16 a day (checked on Kayak). Prices are lower in winter and highest in July and August.

Do I need a credit card?

Most companies want a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Some local agencies accept debit cards, usually with their full insurance.

Where is the booking made?

On the partner's site. getRentera sends you there with your city and dates filled in, and you pay the partner directly.

Will Málaga's ZBE affect my rental car?

Restrictions currently target vehicles without an environmental label, and B-label cars registered outside Málaga were scheduled to follow; that timeline became uncertain after a 2026 regional court ruling. Confirm the car's label at pickup and check the city's current rules if you are staying in the centre.

Is a car worth it in Málaga?

Within the centre, no: much of it is restricted to traffic and it is easy to explore on foot. A car is useful for spread-out day trips such as Ronda, Nerja, El Torcal near Antequera or the Caminito del Rey.
